Seven

“You’re all out of your minds. This will never work. And it’s too dangerous besides!” Shelby had just presented his plan for infiltrating an ex-gay ranch near Nevada City. In two days he’d narrowed it down to one—the Heaven’s Avenging Army Ranch. Because none of the other prospective sites had events scheduled until late February, he’d come up with a “plan” that consisted of Trevor taking part in a Quest for Masculinity retreat that was already planned for the last weekend of the month, a mere nine days away. Once Trevor was accepted as part of the group, he was supposed to poke around and find Tom. All without back up or any way to signal for help if—when—something went wrong.

Another twist I didn’t particularly care for was that Shelby was to accompany Trevor to the ranch posing as Trev’s homophobic father. It was hoped that if Shelby threw enough of a bitch fit about having a faggot son, those in charge of the shadier parts of the conversion therapy might attempt to persuade him to put Trevor through their program, thereby giving Trevor a better chance to find Tom. Even if that didn’t work, if Shelby gave a memorable enough performance, he might create some sympathy among the staff, and would then have easier access to the ranch itself.

“Henry, if this is the quickest way to find Tom, we have to do it,” Trevor said.

“If this is the best way, then let me do it. Tom's my husband. There’s no need to put anyone else at risk.”

Dev shook his head. “If we’re right and Tom's there, the staff has probably been given your photo—or your description at the very least—and they’ll be looking for you. Putting you in there could cause them to do something rash.”

A shiver ran down my spine at the thought of Althea’s faceless minions causing Tom harm. “Okay, that might be a valid point.” I jammed my hands through my hair in frustration. The whole thing was nothing but one gigantic clusterfuck. “Why don’t we have Liam do it? He’s fully trained and more than capable.”

“Liam’s too straight,” Trevor declared. “There’s no way anyone would believe he’s questioning his sexuality.”

“What about Brian or David?”

“Henry, stop,” Trevor pleaded.

“I’m not putting you in harm’s way on a whim!”

Trevor left his chair to kneel in front of mine. He took my hands in his and looked at me with pleading blue eyes. “Shelby and Dev will make sure nothing will happen to me. This really is the best plan. All I have to do is confirm that Tom is being held there and I can call in reinforcements to get us both out.”

“Trevor, this isn’t what you signed up for. I can’t ask you do to this.”

“You’re not. I’m volunteering.”

“You’ve been drafted.” I shot a censorious look at Shelby. What kind of Marine would come up with this train wreck of a plan?

“That’s not true. It wouldn’t make sense for anyone else to do it. I’m still within the age range those vultures like to prey on the most, and I’m gay.
